As of August 17, 2015, the European Regulation on international successions comes into application in the European Union. It concerns all Member States except the UK, Ireland and Denmark.
One of the main changes introduced by the Regulations, including include the creation of the European Certificate of Succession (ECS), a new mode of heir. It is established by the authorities designated for this purpose by each Member State bound by the European regulation .
Registration of ECS will be made in national registers. The ENRWA interconnects the ECS national registers to allow search of those issued in another State, in compliance with the conditions imposed by it . This will facilitate the processing of cross-border succession cases.
The French, Luxembourg and Dutch ECS registers are interconnected.
