Its purpose is to establish the status of heirs and other persons with an interest in a succession. This instrument should enable the quick, easy, and efficient settlement of cross-border successions within the European Union.

The legal certainty provided by this instrument is reinforced by the communication of information on the issuance of ECSs in the Member States. It therefore appeared essential to the ARERT to work towards the proper use of ECS by making its expertise in this area available. The European Network of Registers of Last Wills (RERT) interconnects the registers of ECS in five Member States: France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and, since 12 June 2025, Italy. This initiative enables notaries to securely exchange information on the existence of a ECS in one of these countries.

Yet not all EU Member States have established a ECS register, and ARERT is monitoring developments in this area, to proposing interconnections, and further extend the network's coverage.

With the increase of cross-border successions in Europe, the smooth circulation of ECS references is essential to protect people's rights by facilitating succession procedures. In this way, the ARERT is helping to make the benefits of the European area of freedom and legal certainty more tangible for European citizens.

The Italian register of European Certificates of Succession (ECS) joined the RERT on 12 June 2025.

[10

post-5342","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-actualites
["GET
